The ACTivist is looking for writers who can tell a good story and who share our vision of encouraging activism by linking issues such as peace, ecology and human rights.
share visions for a better world.Think of The ACTivist as a resource and tool-kit to help activists be more effective. The ACTivist covers activism not through event coverage, but by presenting the broader scope of activism.
Our writers look at tactics and strategies and why they succeed or stumble, and interview other activists about what's energizing, stressful, or helpful in an activist's life and work.
Being practical, The ACTivist explores the realities of working with volunteers, organizing grassroots campaigns, fundraising, dealing with police harassment, and building healthier organizations and coalitions. Being reflective, The ACTivist examines splits or rifts within activist groups, searching for new, creative solutions to age-old problems. The ACTivist is a place to safely and constructively examine the results of our actions and consider ways to move forward.
Get involved in The ACTivist and help incite a peaceful riot. We are looking for volunteer writers who share our overall editorial vision, and who can tell the kinds of stories that will help activists in the everyday struggle. We need people who have ideas, can explore and clarify the issues activists face on a daily basis, and can offer fresh and innovative perspectives on activism.
CONTRIBUTOR'S GUIDELINES:
WRITING:
LENGTH OF ARTICLES - 500 to 1500 words. If your work exceeds this length significantly, please make individual arrangements with the editor.
STRUCTURE - Open with a strong lead paragraph emphasizing your main point. From there, develop your ideas and conclude in a strong, definitive fashion.
CLARITY OF EXPRESSION - Write clearly and keep your language relatively simple. Avoid jargon.
STYLE - The ACTivist generally follows Canadian Press style and Oxford Dictionary spelling.
HEADLINE - Suggest a short, punchy headline that will grab the readers' attention.
PHOTOS AND GRAPHICS - You are invited to suggest or provide photos and graphics. Please discuss these with the editor beforehand.
SUPPORT MATERIAL - If you include quotations, statistics or anecdotes, please reference your sources. As well, we ask that you provide contact information for organizations mentioned in your article: web or e-mail address, postal address, and phone number with the full area code or country code.
EDITING:
The Activist reserves the right to edit contributions for any or all of the following: size, clarity and accuracy. We prefer to work closely with writers, so we may have questions and might ask for revisions. Articles will be returned to the writer for approval when significant editing has been done. We will work with you to ensure that our revisions reflect your point of view.
FILING CONTRIBUTIONS:
DEADLINES - These are set when proposals are approved and assigned. Stories that arrive late, with no prior warning, may be held until the following issue or dropped altogether.
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION - Include a brief paragraph with your article, providing your name, any organizations you wish to be affiliated with, and how you wish to be identified. Be sure to tell us how to contact you.
SUBMISSIONS - Work should be sent to The ACTivist by e-mail to editor@activistmagazine.com as an attachment or on floppy disc. Word or Open Office formats are preferred but not required for articles.
PAYMENT - We regret that contributors cannot be paid. The ACTivist is an all-volunteer publication. However, contributors will receive a copy of the issue in which their work appears. Should you require extra copies, let us know.
COPYRIGHT - The ACTivist is granted the right to publish the work in the magazine and also on activistmagazine.com. Contributors retain full copyright.
SUBSEQUENT PUBLICATION - If your article is later reprinted, after appearing in The ACTivist, we would appreciate credit in the following format: "Originally published in The ACTivist Magazine, www.activistmagazine.com [Month, Year]."
PHOTOGRAPHY:
COMPOSITION - Keep photos simple and tightly composed. Try to avoid expansive photos which include distracting backgrounds - these do not translate well in magazines and on websites. A picture is worth a thousand words, so it is said. The viewer should not have to guess what those words are. Your photos should tell a story that is self-evident in the image. This is especially true for cover photographs.
